  • Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't managed to blog that much until now. We’ve been really busy so there’s loads to say about our Australia adventure!

In our 1st two tournaments, we flew to Rockhampton and then onto Kawana.
At Rockhampton I beat Jocelyn Rae over 3 sets in the 1st round of the singles then lost another tricky 3 setter to Alexis Prousis of USA ranked WTA308. I then teamed up with Jocelyn to reach the doubles semi-final. The GB dream team !
The 2nd tournament was in Kawana, this was on the gold coast which was absolutely beautiful.
We stayed in beach side apartments that week, so didn't find it too hard to motivate ourselves for our early morning runs along the beach, something I will definitely miss when we go back to England.
I fell and hurt my knee whilst practising in Rockhampton so decided not to play the doubles. In the singles I drew the 1st seed Jess Moore but lost to her in 3 sets. Sophie Proctor didn’t qualify and Liz Thomas lost a tough match against the Aussie Monique Adamczak who beat Soph earlier in the week. Tennis wise the trip had been fairly disappointing for us all.
We spent the next 2 weeks living in Melbourne with Kevin (my coach Suzi Riley’s dad who we've now named Captain Kev) and Glenda. It's been a godsend having a home to stay in, it was so much nicer than staying in hotels especially since we are so far away from our families in England!
Suzi’s twin brother Steve took us to Melbourne Park each day for training sessions where we met up with Vanessa Lagoon . She’d already worked on my fitness regime over the grass court season. Our training over the two weeks was high intensity and very hard work! Whilst at Melbourne Park we also had match practice with the Australian players organised again by Steve.
During our stay we were able to do a little sight seeing and window-shopping! Steve’s English girlfriend Fiona took us to some great places to eat and let us watch her DVD’s in the evenings. My favourite visit was Chapel Street where many of the professionals go shopping after the Australian Open in January. Some of the prices were extremely high but it was nice to look! Fiona and I saw some nice dresses at around $2,500 each… we told Steve he could get us them for Christmas - he didn’t seem too interested! The AFL grand finals (Aussie Rules) were held over a full weekend while we were there, its such big event where everyone stops work for the day to watch, we got right into the spirit of things and all went to a BBQ at some friends of the Riley family. ! An “under dog” team called the Hawks won which was exciting though it took us all of the day to understand the rules!
Our third tournament was in Taralgan about a 90-minute drive from Melbourne so no flying this time. I got through to the quarterfinals in singles to play Mel South ranked 128 in the world and also from GB. I’d played her before in the summer at Surbiton on the grass; it had been a close match on that occasion though I’d lost in three sets. I knew I was under no pressure so just played aggressively and won the first set 6-1! The 2nd was a great battle; I lost it in a tiebreak 7-6 but knew how close it had been. I started the 3rd set really positive, went with serve until 4-4 where she broke me, I gave everything though to Mel’s credit she came up with some really great shots. I had my chances but eventually lost it 6-4 in the third. We've had two great matches now, I’m getting nearer and hopefully with more hard work I can keep competing with these players up and around the top 100!

The next tournament is in Mount Gambier. To our disbelief, the Australian weather has been awful, really windy and cold for the past 3 weeks so we are expecting the same again!
I'll keep you updated as to how we all get on in our last 2 tournaments before we return to England - we'll hopefully grab a few more points!

    Bye for know.

    Love Naomi x x
